Tristan Murray

Senior Project Surveyor

Tristan Murray, Explorer.

That was his first job title, with the boy who explored his surroundings at any given opportunity making maps even before he could really write.

The son of a dedicated dentist and a tenacious teacher, both adventurers and travellers, the desire to learn and explore was instilled at an early age. He grew up in many places, and quite often with the sound of tent canvas flapping in the background.

But his sketch books were full of maps, setting out the lay of the land in whatever location the family found themselves, and Tristan agrees this probably led him towards surveying, which he went on to study at the University of Otago.

After studying, Tristan couldn’t resist the call of travel, his wanderlust taking him to work in the far flung corners of the globe, including Kazakstan, Oman, Kuwait, Libya, Brazil and Scotland.

Tristan joined Team Envelope in Wellington in mid-2023. He loves the work for the same reasons which led him to surveying initially: it gets you outdoors, it is constructive, and – of course – it involves exploring.

What has been different is the vibe at Envelope.

“Envelope has a different vibe to pretty much every place I’ve worked. There is an energy about the people here. People here give a shit about their work, and about the people they work with. Lots of workplaces do that a bit, but Envelope does it in spades.”

Outside work he enjoys catching up with family and friends, walking, reading and movies.

And like a true explorer, some of his favourite places are adventure playgrounds: the Himalayas in Nepal, or closer to home, the Southern Alps.

Tristan loves eating (his favourite hobby) and drinking and trying new flavours. A whiskey when winding down is this explorer’s favourite tipple when he finally downs tools for the day.
