Structural Engineer

Tom grew up building houses in the trees, and crafting dams in the streams of the rural Wellington area where he was raised.

He came from a family which never sat still long, choosing instead to travel and explore new places. Tom always preferred to be outside, testing the weight limit of one of his new havens up in the trees, or spending time with his two older siblings.

He says this early love of making and building things, kickstarted his curiosity, pushing him to explore and gain more understanding of structures and they were designed. Combined with his love of maths at secondary school, engineering was the perfect fit. In 2019 Tom gained his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury – with Honours.

Tom works out of Team Envelope’s Wellington central city offices, joining in 2023. He describes working there as “truly rewarding” with an “unmatched sense of family”, where people are always ready to lend a hand and offer their support to one another.

Outside of work, he still prefers to get into the great outdoors, mountain biking on local Wellington trails, and playing rugby in winter.

Tom’s favourite New Zealand place to unwind is the West Coast of the South Island, where his dad grew up. He tries to get down there at least once a year to hike in the native bush. At least that’s what his bio says. We suspect he is still building houses in the trees on the wild coast. Maybe the houses are just slightly more elaborate and have more engineering flair these days.
